What is the Value of Therapy?

Mental health trends in the United States over the past five to ten years have shown noticeable increases in depression and anxiety – and the coronavirus pandemic accelerated the trends.

Well-regarded studies and news reports put the rate of depression at nearly 10 percent among adults; and highest among 18-to-29-year-olds. Measures of anxiety rates show about 35 percent of U.S. adults reporting some level of anxiety.

If you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, what should you do?

While self-help can be beneficial, you may be an excellent candidate for psychotherapy. It allows one to work with a licensed counselor or therapist for guidance and support.

An Affirming Setting to Work Through Your Needs

It’s also important to remember change takes time.

While setting goals for yourself is important, be patient and understand that you’ll be changing long-entrenched patterns and establishing healthier ones. There is a learning curve, some things may go faster, and others take more time.

Each of us deals with self-improvement opportunities differently and giving ourselves adequate time and space is essential.

Do I Need to Go to Therapy?

While some people are referred to professional counseling by doctors and others, it’s quite common to decide on your own to attend therapy.

Chances are if you feel as though you need to attend, you do. But you can also have an introductory phone call or session to understand the possibilities before you decide.

If your concerns are more about your relationship or family than yourself, consider attending couples’ therapy or family sessions. We offer both at Wellness Counseling along with individual therapy appointments.
