Family Therapy Can be
Life-Changing for Everyone

Is your family dynamic uncomfortable or difficult? Are you wanting to improve the relationship between your partner, children and/or other family members? If yes, attending the best clinic for family therapy Hawaii offers with our trained, compassionate counselors can help. You can meet with us for any reason, but families often attend therapy for specific reasons such as adjusting to the changes in the family dynamics due to separation or divorce, conflict between parents and children, or the impacts of stressor on the family. Regardless of your needs, the sessions will help family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring you closer together for a lifetime.

What are the Reasons for
Attending Family Therapy?

Families most often seek therapy when experiencing conflicts between parents and children, dealing with the impact of substance abuse or a mental illness, adjusting to the changes in the family dynamics due to separation or divorce and/or coping with the impacts of other stressor on the entire family. Each issue can uniquely affect different family members, but all will benefit from help. When difficult situations arise, and communication becomes strained or breaks down, we provide a neutral, safe space to re-engage.

Even during challenging times, family members can learn to support each other.

Life isn’t always predictable, and many situations can cause family members to feel anger, conflict, stress, or grief. When difficult emotions or conflicts occur, they can lead to troubled relationships that would benefit from counseling. Family therapists have many strategies to restore communication while acknowledging feelings and meeting everyone’s needs. The goal is to help every family member equally.

How Do Family Therapy
Appointments Work?

First session: Everyone in the family needs to attend the initial session. Each person will introduce themselves, and we will establish a positive therapeutic relationship. In the second half, we’ll discuss your family relationship, the main problems and stresses, and your goals for improvement.

Follow-up sessions: We’ll examine your family’s problem-solving abilities and how you can express thoughts and emotions productively. It’s also important to explore roles, rules, and behavior patterns and their effect on conflicts – and how to work through these issues. We’ll identify your family’s strengths, such as caring for one another, and weaknesses, such as difficulty confiding in one another.

What Happens in Family Therapy?
How Do I Prepare?

Your family therapy appointments with Wellness Counseling will run for 50 to 60 minutes. You can attend in person or a telehealth session online. Before each session, each family should jot down the questions or issues they want to discuss. For family members who don’t get along, it’s helpful to decide in advance what to say when it’s your turn to speak – remain respectful and calm, and don’t argue.

Talking Through Difficult Issues with a Therapist Present Can Help.

Be aware in advance that some sessions may go more smoothly than others. Also, there may be some days when family members communicate more easily than others. It’s all part of the counseling process, and it’s important to do your best during each session, regardless of how it goes. Then, outside of your therapy sessions, try to practice new skills, be open to change, and be more accepting of others.

With us, you can talk about your concerns with someone you can trust, who will individualize your sessions to meet your family’s specific needs.
