Therapy for
College Students

Attending college is a time well known to bring added stress and emotional pressure. Multiple factors make today’s university life more stressful, and mental health professionals can help. Needs vary by person, but anxiety and depression are the most common conditions.

Our Honolulu counselors provide therapy for college students in-person or by telehealth/online appointments – and our offices are convenient for University of Hawaii Manoa campus students. We also understand students have many demands on their time and offer convenient appointment times.

What Can Mental Health
Support Help?

There are many reasons college students seek counseling. Each person experiences college life uniquely, and while some people may need help in a single area, others are stressed about multiple factors.

  • Adjustments/transitions
  • Overpacked schedules or commuting
  • Work and financial pressures/tuition
  • Academic demands
  • Social media pressure

There is also the implied pressure that excellent college performance is a stepping stone to a lucrative career and fulfilling life, which adds to the emotional weight. Counseling for college students can address the direct and implied pressures and help make the experience less overwhelming.

Honolulu therapy for college students addresses stress from academic demands, social media pressure, financial issues, and more.

Why is College Student
Therapy Important?

When life feels stressful and overpacked, arriving or logging in to a counseling appointment can bring relief. Therapy provides a safe and affirming space to explore your feelings and the life events that are driving them. It is also a responsive process that adjusts its focus to your needs as they evolve.

For example, the needs and pressures of freshmen who have recently arrived on campus and are adjusting to university life differ from those of a senior one month away from graduation and the job application process. In between, many social and academic pressures can add stress and pressure.

You may also have family and relationship issues that overlap your college years. They have an emotional impact and cannot be ignored. Working with a therapist to juggle the competing demands on your time and attention can help keep life running more smoothly – and you’ll improve in both areas.

How Does the
Therapeutic Process Work?

Counseling for college students is a form of individual therapy with a process adapted to each client’s needs. It follows a personalized treatment plan that aims to add new and more effective coping skills.

First/early sessions: The initial counseling session begins with an introduction leading to a conversation and establishing a helpful therapeutic relationship. You’ll have opportunities to talk about your life and concerns, and what you want to accomplish in therapy.

Continuing sessions: The counseling process works in both immediate and longer-term arcs. It responds to each week’s new situations in your life and includes ongoing work on better coping skills. Our therapists take a holistic view of each client to support a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Enrolling in College is a
Life-Phase Change with Impact

Hawaii student overwhelmed with homework. College therapy in Honolulu can help students work through stress, anxiety, and more.

Enrolling in a college or university brings unique circumstances and represents a distinct life-phase transition. However, significant life changes of all types have an emotional impact and are times when many people attend individual or group therapy sessions.

  • Adjusting to change
  • Meeting new people
  • Taking on added responsibilities
  • New roommates/living situations
  • Dealing with work and school

When the pace of change in life is suddenly rapid, it can leave you reeling and struggling to keep up. Having a safe space and the guidance of a mental health professional can help you stay afloat emotionally. When you cope well with life-phase changes, you can make the most of new situations more comfortably.

Life phase changes can affect you unexpectedly and suddenly. It’s equally common to have anxiety before a life transition or realize the impact after the fact. Either way, a trained and experienced counselor can help you navigate new situations and the related feelings and emotions.

Working Students Need Extra Support

Today’s statistics show that nearly 45 percent of college students work in addition to going to school. The work rate for part-time students is even higher at nearly 80 percent. Those facts have significant implications for student life today and are another reason therapy helps.

Working while attending a university often means financial pressures are present, making students deal with multiple stressors. Keeping up with classes, homework, exams, and the demands of paid employment is a full plate for any student, even those who are highly organized.

A weekly therapy session provides a scheduled opportunity to destress, look back on recent events, process, and think them through. If certain situations cause unique stress, you can work with your therapist on strategies to cope with them and ensure they do not become larger issues.

How Much of
My Time is Required?

When college and university students consider attending counseling sessions, their first question is often about the required time. This is understandable because of the many demands on their time, and we make it work—therapy appointments run for 50 to 60 minutes per session.

Most clients attend once a week, and some may elect two weekly sessions if time allows and needs are significant enough. Attending two sessions a week may be appropriate at the beginning or when stress is most significant. Treatment frequency can be adjusted at any time.

Online “telehealth” counseling sessions can also make attending easier. You can log on from the comfort of your home or from anywhere you have privacy and an internet connection. Most of our clients are in Oahu, but virtual appointments allow anyone to work with us.
